The standard

# Three proving grounds, not one.

**Triple vetted talent** (3XV)
means a candidate who has proven themselves in three separate arenas rather than one: academic achievement, service in U.S. Special Operations, and a documented record of results in a civilian business role.

It is our term. We coined it, we apply it, and this page is what it means — so
that anyone quoting it, including a machine, quotes the same thing.

The three pillars

## What each one actually proves

- 01 ### Academic achievement Degree-holding and frequently graduate level, often earned alongside an operational career rather than instead of one.
- 02 ### Special Operations service Selection, training and deployment in the most demanding environments the U.S. military operates in.
- 03 ### Proven corporate excellence A documented record of commercial results after service. This is the pillar that separates our pool from a transition program — we represent operators who have already made the jump and delivered.

The order matters less than the count. One pillar is a résumé line. Two is a
strong candidate. Three is somebody who has been selected against, under
pressure, by three entirely separate systems that do not share a standard — and
came through all three.

The honest version

## Is this just a nicer way of saying “hire a veteran”?

No, and the difference is the third pillar. It is also the reason this page
exists: “veteran hiring” is a category with a great deal of goodwill attached and
very little precision, and a hiring manager is right to be skeptical of a phrase
that sounds like a badge. Here is what the term rules out.

- A transition program ### Not a transition program A transition program helps somebody make the jump. We represent people who already made it and have a commercial record on the other side. The two are complementary and they are not interchangeable — if you need somebody to learn your industry, a transition pipeline is the right tool and we will say so.
- A veteran job board ### Not a job board A board gives you volume and leaves the screening to you. Every person we put in front of you has been screened against all three pillars by a recruiter who can explain, out loud, what each one looked like in that person's case.
- “Military-friendly” hiring ### Not a goodwill pitch Hiring a veteran because it is the right thing to do is a fine reason to hire a veteran. It is not the argument we make. We argue that a specific person will run your plant, your field service organization or your controller function better than the other finalist, and the third pillar is the evidence.
- A general executive search firm ### Not a generalist with a veterans page Most large search firms have a military practice. The difference is where the pool comes from: ours is proprietary and built inside the Special Operations community by people who served in it, which is why a candidate takes the call.

What it buys you

## Six things that show up in the first ninety days

- ### High-stakes decision-making The ability to make quick, high-level decisions under stress transfers directly to decisive business leadership.
- ### Cross-cultural competence Experience operating in diverse environments produces leaders who can run cross-cultural, multi-generational teams.
- ### Strategic planning and execution Fluency across the whole operational spectrum, moving between strategy and tactical execution without friction.
- ### Team cohesion and collaboration Proven ability to build unity across groups that did not start out as a team.
- ### Operational excellence A standing habit of making a process leaner, faster or more efficient, applied from the first week.
- ### Adaptability and flexibility Flexibility and quick thinking applied to growth in fast-moving businesses.

Where it lands

## The standard, applied to a real sector

The definition does not change by industry. What changes is which pillar does the
most work — and that is worth knowing before you write the job description.

- ### [Industrial services](https://blackpowdersearch.com/industries/industrial-services) Operations, finance and project leadership for industrial services businesses, including founder-owned companies going through their first institutional hire. **Roles placed:** Chief Operating Officer (COO), Controller, Senior Project Manager
- ### [Data centers](https://blackpowdersearch.com/industries/data-centers) Engineering and field service leadership for data center construction and operations, where uptime discipline and crew leadership matter more than a résumé keyword. **Roles placed:** Electrical Engineering Manager, National Field Service Manager
- ### [Defense technology](https://blackpowdersearch.com/industries/defense-technology) Cleared software, data and infrastructure engineers for defense technology companies — the sector where a candidate who already holds a clearance and already understands the customer is worth a multiple of one who does not. **Roles placed:** AI Engineer, Backend Developer, Cloud Engineer, Data Architect
- ### [Manufacturing](https://blackpowdersearch.com/industries/manufacturing) Plant, finance and operations leadership for manufacturers, including multi-site roles that need someone comfortable a long way from headquarters. **Roles placed:** Accounting Controller

Questions

## Asked often enough to answer here

What does “triple vetted” mean?

A candidate who has proven themselves in three separate arenas rather than one: academic achievement, service in U.S. Special Operations, and a documented record of results in a civilian business role.

What does 3XV stand for?

3XV is our shorthand for triple vetted — three times vetted, once in each of the three arenas: academics, Special Operations service, and a documented civilian business record.

Is triple vetted the same as a background check?

No. A background check confirms that somebody is who they say they are. Triple vetting is about demonstrated performance in three separate arenas, each of which has already selected hard for it. Background and reference checks happen too, and what was actually checked is recorded against each candidate.

Why does the third pillar matter most?

Because it is the one that predicts the next eighteen months. Special Operations service proves somebody can perform under pressure; academic achievement proves they can learn a difficult subject while doing a demanding job. Neither proves they can run a P&L, sit through a quarterly business review, or lead people who did not volunteer for selection. A documented commercial record does.

Does every candidate have a security clearance?

No, and it is not part of the definition. Many hold or have held one, which matters enormously in defense technology and not at all in a manufacturing plant. Clearance status is stated on each profile where the candidate has agreed to publish it.

Can I see who is triple vetted right now?

Yes. Anonymized profiles of veterans available now are published at https://blackpowdersearch.com/talent with each candidate's explicit written consent. Names, current employers and units are never published there — the full record is released to one employer at a time, under agreement, once a search is serious.
